Are your loved ones properly protected if you were to fall ill? It is particularly important for LGBT couples to have accurate and up to date estate planning documents due to recent changes in federal and state marriage laws.

A Living Trust may be the solution, but unfortunately…

All Living Trust based estate plans are NOT created equal! There are good ones and bad ones. Don’t wait until it is too late – when you or your spouse/partner is ill, disabled or passes away – to find out what kind of plan you really have.

Come to one of our FREE LEGAL WORKSHOPS to learn the basics of Trusts, Wills and Medi-Cal planning. A little time invested now can save your loved ones a lot of unnecessary trouble in the future.

LGBT Estate Planning and Tax Issues, 18 months post-DOMA repeal

Our Family Coalition GAPA Openhouse

Co-sponsored by the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, Our Family Coalition and Openhouse

Co-presented by the Hone Maxwell LLP

The historic decision in United States v. Windsor in June 2013, while heralded the repeal of DOMA Section 3, has profoundly changed the legal landscape for same-sex couples throughout California and the United States. While the federal recognition of same-sex marriage has in many ways made estate planning and tax planning easier, in other ways, the issues are still divergent and more complicated than for opposite-sex married couples.

Program topics include:

Should we get married, or state domestic partnered?
How will marriage or domestic partnership affects our state and federal taxes?
What estate planning issues do we need to address if we do get married or domestic partnered?
Is it time to set up a joint trust, or change our property titling to community property?
What special planning is needed if we choose not to marry or register as state domestic partners?

*If you also have general questions about wills, trusts, and probate, we would encourage you to attend Estate Planning Tools immediately preceding this program.

Wednesday, Feb. 25
7:15 pm – 8:15 pm
